Foveon Inc. was founded in 1997 by Dr. Carver Mead, a pioneer in solid-state electronics and VLSI design, and professor emeritus at the California Institute of Technology. Foveon's mission is to become a leading supplier of image capture solutions through the development of innovative technology and products.
The company initially developed professional digital cameras that delivered photographic image quality comparable to medium format film. In bringing these products to market, Foveon gained extensive knowledge in sensor design and credibility in the photographic industry.
In late 2000, Foveon began to develop technology and sub-system products targeted for prosumer, amateur and consumer markets. In September of 2000 Foveon announced its 16.8-million pixel image sensor, the highest resolution CMOS-based image sensor in the world, manufactured using cutting edge 0.18 micron CMOS process technology.
Foveon has continued to advance the field of digital photography by leveraging the company's extensive expertise in photographic systems, image sensor design and CMOS technology. This effort has led to the development of the Foveon X3® direct image sensor, the world's first image sensor that directly captures color in three layers, just like film.
Foveon is a privately held corporation and is not traded on any stock exchange.
