Within the BMBF-funded project "Modular Diode Laser Systems (MDS)" laser systems, that derive benefit from the specific features and advantages of diode lasers, are developed and tested. For welding and flame cutting applications a modular diode laser system that generates a ring shaped laser beam has to be realized. The beam diameter and the beam width of the device were specified with 5 mm and 1 mm respectively. The laser system has to reach an optical output power of about 2 kW.
