Genetix Ltd. (www.genetix.com ) has issued a new HTS / Cell Biology applications note describing the validation of its aliQuot low-volume liquid dispenser for dispensing of adherent and non-adherent mammalian cells.

Mammalian culture cells are increasingly being used for processes such as protein and antibody production, pharmaceutical screening and toxicity testing. These processes applications are increasingly being miniaturised into 96-, 384- and 1536-well plates. As a consequence, there is a need to accurately dispense multiple small volumes of sterile medium as well as cell suspensions. With these small volumes the process is both tedious and inaccurate if done manually.

The applications note discusses and demonstrates how the aliQuot overcomes the major issues involved with automated dispensing of mammalian cells and culture media. These include no detectable loss of cell viability compared to manual methods; a proprietary needle design ensuring gentle and even dispersion of cells into the microplate well and highly accurate dispensing (CV of < 10% at 1µl) reducing the number of replicates that need to be performed saving materials and reducing costs. The compact aliQuot has been designed for automated dispensing of reagents, chemicals, reaction mixes and media in the 1-350 µl range making it the perfect choice for 1536- 384- and 96-well microplates. A proprietary fast pressure-timing dispense mechanism allows the aliQuot to fill a 1536-well plate with 1µl in under 30 seconds with a well-to-well CV of approx. 5% - a level of accuracy unsurpassed by any other instrument in its price bracket.

Other HTS / Cell biology applications that should benefit from the aliQuot low-volume liquid dispenser include Drug screening and Toxicity testing, limiting dilution studies for cell production, Hybridoma and ELISA screening and determination of Antibody titres.
