INSTANT TB SCREENING MOVES CLOSER TO REALITY
Instant testing for tuberculosis has moved a step closer as Cambridge-based Rapid Biosensor Systems (RBS), moves to the prototyping stage, ready for wide-ranging in-field trials.
The non-invasive screening kit - which comprises a breathalyser and reader - incorporates a range of technologies that allow full portability and instant results. It can be assembled without the need for clean room conditions and may be used by non-medics. The biosensor within the breathalyser tube uses a simple optical prism and a 'bio coating' that can be adapted according to the disease being screened. The optical read-out presents immediate findings that do not need further interpretation.
CEO Dennis Camilleri said, 'Nothing on the market comes close to our system in terms of size, durability and results turnaround. As well as instant testing for TB, the kit also offers detection for E.coli for which we are now completing extensive laboratory trialing.'
The RBS package is seen as a breakthrough in the fight against TB, a disease that kills some two million people each year. The technology is especially suitable for use in developing countries where screening costs are often key to progressing with suitable treatment programmes.
Following previous SMART funding, RBS is now seeking additional second round investment and moving to commercial licensing. The company is also undertaking a comprehensive trials programme in the UK and India, to enable the product to be developed further.
