Imaging arrays can be either linear or two dimensional and can range from 5mm to 200mm in size. Individual pixels can be as small as 0.2mm depending on material and thickness. The white reflector between pixels ensures that optical cross talk is minimised. Special constructions using high atomic number interleaving materials can be used to minimise X-ray cross talk.
The imaging array can be coupled directly to a position sensitive photomultiplier tube, CCD array or linear photodiode to form a complete assembly.
Applications cover medical and industrial X-ray imaging such as mammography and X-ray baggage screening at airports.
