There are often circumstances when a plane polarized beam can be undesirable, as for instance, with a polarization sensitive instrument such as a reflecting spectrometer. A depolarizer will change this beam into a pseudo-depolarized beam by scrambling up the polarization. Depolarizers made from crystal quartz/fused silica transmit down to 220nm, as the two components are optically contacted. Two types of device are offered - a wedge depolarizer and a Lyot depolarizer.
