Economical, One Inch Diameter, Fast Steering Mirror
Irvine, California – January 6, 2004 – Newport Corporation’s new FSM-300 Fast Steering Mirror offers the same automated laser beam positioning capabilities as its groundbreaking, two inch diameter sibling in a more economical, one inch diameter configuration. Specifically, the FSM-300 provides the ability for high bandwidth, two-axis stabilizing, pointing and scanning of laser beams over a ±52 mrad (±3°) range with a resolution of better than 1 µrad. Because the FSM-300 utilizes a single mirror mounted on a two axis flexure, it delivers several advantages over two mirror galvonometer driven systems; these include lower wavefront distortion, no displacement jitter and no polarization rotation. Flexure construction also delivers a larger angular scanning range than piezo-driven mirrors. In addition to offering lower cost than Newport’s larger steering mirror, the FSM-300 features a field replaceable mirror.
The FSM-300 is a turnkey instrument, useful for a wide range of laser beam steering functions in laboratory settings, as well as for OEMs. These include beam stabilization, scanning, pointing, tracking, and even image stabilization. Typical applications comprise free space telecommunications, semiconductor metrology, medical and surgical devices, and astronomical imaging.
The FSM-300 is supplied with a pyrex mirror having either an enhanced aluminum coating, which delivers high reflectivity throughout the visible spectrum, or a protected gold coating, for operation throughout the infrared. It includes a driver that provides all the necessary mirror control signals, and allows interface with external electronics.
