EPSILON is an automated non-contact laser sensor measuring system using a rotating laser range finder as basic principle. This principle was chosen to fit the requirement of SNCF to have a small light weight trolley to be used by one operator. EPSILON enables to process all the data on-line. This unique feature provides the following advantages :

- EPSILON alerts the operator, while pushing the trolley, whenever any obstacle hinders the gauge.
- While stopping the trolley, the operator may launch a clearance simulation to calculate the future clearance after maintenance work.
A dedicated user friendly software package has been developed, bringing SNCF’s expertise in the field of infrastructure maintenance.
The laser telemeter enables to determine accurately the distance by using a phase measurement method with high frequency modulation. A scanner including a rotating mirror is used to scan the laser beam in a plan perpendicular perpendicular to the track. The combination of the laser range finder and the scanner allows to scan the whole profile around the track. Speed ratio between the range finder data rate and the rotating mirror determines the angular sampling of the measured profile. Angular position of the mirror while rotating is accurately monitored by an encoder. Speed ratio between the scanner and the walking speed of the operator determines the sampling step along the track. The design of EPSILON assumes the operator is walking at a speed of 1 metre per second, with main performances as follows:

Profile spacing along the track:
- 10 mm while walking at 1 m/s
- Resolution over each profile
- 5 000 dots/revolution while walking
- 12 000 dots/revolution when stopped
- Obstacle size detected = 20 mm x 20 mm

Additional features :
- Developed in partnership with SNCF
- Measuring speed: 1 m/s
- Track clearance monitoring
- Gauge & adjacent track (6 foot) measurement
- Obstacle detection :
- Measurement range: 1 – 10 metres
- Obstacle size: 20 mm x 20 mm
- Day/night operation
- On line clearance assessment software
