Fibertek, Inc., under subcontract to Sonoma, an L-3 communications company, and under sponsorship of the US Army RDECOM CERDEC NVESD, has developed a compact eye safe Laser Rangefinder/Designator (LRF/D). The LRF/D contains a laser transmitter operating at 1.06mm and 1.57 mm, a receiver assembly for ranging at 1.57 mm, and the required drive electronics for the system. The total weight of the LRF/D laser head is 6.4 lbs. Packaging of the system is the highlight of the program, where weight, volume and performance are the primary design criteria. The system sets a new “high water mark” for lasers of this class in a small package.
