Flat glass: VDT2200 – LORD Ingenierie

During the manufacture of glass on the float glass line, any faults in the material are detected by an on-line inspection system and marked with ink or paint. The ribbon of float glass is then cut into plates and stored for later use in the automobile industry (windscreens front and rear....) or the building industry (double glazing....).
These large-sized plates are then cut into rectangular or trapezoidal primary blanks of the dimension required for the final product. If an ink or paint mark is visible on the blank, the blank has then to be rejected as defective.
In the automobile industry, the ideal location for the VDT 2200 is just before the cutting out of the primary blank. In the building industry the ideal position is just after the final cutting.

Characteristics of products to be controlled:
- Flat glass
- Tint of glass : brown, green, colourless
- Transmission of glass: over 25%
- Maximum width of glass : 2.2 m (more if required)
- Maximum length of glass :3.2 m (more if required)
- Thickness : 1 to 12 mm
- Minimum size marked : 5 x 5 mm
- Maximum transmission of marking : 60%
- Colour and orientation of marking : without incidence
- Maximum conveyor speed : 80 m/mn
Location:
The detection principle being based on the absorption of light by a mark, the glass must be lit from underneath across its whole width and observed from above. The system must therefore be located between two successive conveyors. Other location constraints relate to the height of the camera and the access required to it for adjustment and maintenance purposes.
The camera support and the lighting, rugged and independent of the conveyor structure ensure its protection from parasite vibrations.

Architecture:
The VDT 2200 system has been built around components specially developed for industrial control purposes. These components, notably those used for the acquisition and processing of the video image, perform particularly well in the case of moving products and allow us to use an industrial PC computing platform.
The VDT 2200 system is comprised of three main elements :
Lighting :
- Light box using standard fluorescent tubes
- Specific power supply for fluorescent tubes

Advantages and Performance:
- Total reliability on correctly marked products
- " Accept/reject " response given less than 10 ms after the end of the passage of the glass under the camera (100 ms with options /O and /C)
- The VDT 2200 system can be used on a large majority of existing installations
- Operates on standardly clean glass
