CONTEXT

An aeronautical engine manufacturer has to process a huge amount of data produced by
test benches, in-flight tests and simulation, and make it available to teams responsible for developing changes to these jet engines, in the mechanics, aerodynamics, thermics, aerothermodynamics and acoustics sectors.

THE PROBLEM

With the aim of reducing costs and rationalizing activities, this company wanted to switch
from in-house custom-built software developed on an IBM Mainframe, based on a
different DB2 database for each trade, to a standardized application for all trades, operating on Unix and PC workstations, able to be deployed on several hundreds of workstations, with peak time use by 70 users simultaneously. It also wanted to automate production of boards designed for test reports.

THE DYNAWORKS RESPONSE

All test and calculation data is processed by the Dynaworks version 5 database (64 bit module) on Sun V880 server. All data is available on line. Database administration is automated.Results are consulted and analysed using Dynaworks version 5, operating on PC and Sgi workstation, accessing the database via the network.
Dynaworks' open design and flexibility have been put to good use to develop:
• A common data model for Aero and Thermo trades, a data model for mechanical engineers and a data model for acoustics engineers.
• A customisation application designed to supplement Dynaworks analysis tools with specific tools for the customer's trades.

The version 5 drawing board module has enabled automation of analyses, as well as direct production of documents in MS Word format.

PERFORMANCE

All in-flight testing and test bench data for an engine since the start of programs:
11,000,000 transitional curves, 100,000,000 state data items.
