LAI-2000 for calculation of leaf area index
The LAI-2000 Plant Canopy Analyser
The LAI-2000 calculates Leaf Area Index (LAI) and other canopy structure attributes from radiation measurements made with a “fish-eye" optical sensor. Measurements made above the canopy and below the canopy are used to determine canopy light interception at 5 angles, from which LAI is computed using a model of radiative transfer in vegetative canopies.
Leaf area index measurements with the LAI-2000 take only a small fraction of the time required to directly measure leaf area using conventional methods. The cost savings for labour over the length of a research project can be substantial. The LAI-2000 does not require direct solar beam radiation, so you do not have to wait for a clear day, or for the sun angle to change. Further, measurements can be made under a variety of sky conditions ; obscured sun is best, but measurements can be made on celar days using the proper measurement technique.
Flexible instrument configurations also allow the LAI-2000 to be used in a variety of canopies ranging in sizes from short grasses to forests. Use of a second sensor on the same logger is possible in order to have simultaneous measurements above and below the canopy.
