An insight into a new generation of laboratory scale automated solutions for cell biology will be provided in a talk by Marc N. Feiglin (Chief Technology Officer - Drug Discovery) of the Tecan Group at International Biotech and Lab Automation Europe 2004 in London (November 16th - 17th).

With the increasing amount of cell culture work performed in today's life science laboratory, the need for automation is evident. Whether it is to provide cells for cell-based assays or cell-based products, such as expressed proteins, the process of culturing large amounts of cells is a time consuming, laborious process. Over the past decade, a number of large-scale solutions for automating cell maintenance and growth have been introduced to the market. These systems have demonstrated the ability to automate the many aspects of cell culture. However, the price and size of these solutions have made them inaccessible to the large majority of cell biology laboratories now looking towards automation.

Designing automation systems that are flexible, scalable and affordable is not an easy task. By utilising standard laboratory automation components, the talk will show how Tecan has been able to design a number of systems for various cell biology tasks that meet these criteria. Tecan's product line now includes automated solutions for simple media exchange for feeding of slow growing cell lines in microplates, automated solutions for cell line development and transfections, complex fully automated systems for all aspects of flask based cell and protein production, and even informatics systems for management of cell libraries. This talk will present examples of these solutions that have been installed at customer's facilities and discuss how these solutions were able to over come many of the issues of automating cell biology with standard laboratory automation. Where possible, data will be presented to demonstrate how these solutions compare to manual cell biology methods.
