Detection of smoke is carried out by the method of remote laser sensing when backscattering signals from smoke clouds in the visible spectral range are measured. The laser radiation reflected from the smoke allows to determine the distance to it and to make an estimation of its density. The lidar, when it was used in Portugal in 2000, allowed to detect a source of smoke at 6.5 kms with the average discharge of burning substance of 25 gramm per one second
