Positive angular alignment with accuracy of better than 0.1 arc-second at 10 feet in a shop environment is rapidly achieved with the Model 6450 laser and a conventional auto-collimating target mirror. A beam splitter and quadrature array of photodetectors compatible with the Model 7600 Automatic Centering Detector display are housed in the front of the laser.

The laser will show a null when the reflected beam is exactly coincident with the exiting beam, and will show actual return beam displacement at the laser in the vertical and horizontal planes if the target mirror is not exactly perpendicular to the beam path. It is useful in determining waviness or "drunkenness" of machine ways where conventional auto-collimators are used. When utilized with a vertical plane mirror, the laser output beam provides a highky accurate long-range reference to true level - particularly useful in installing machines, presses, and tools on level co-planar pads. It can also be used in regular alignment applications in the same manner as the Model 6400 when coupled with a centering detector.
