Spectra-Physics, a Division of Newport Corporation and a world leader in high-power diode laser solutions, has introduced wavelength locking technology for its ProLite® fiber coupled diode lasers. With a very narrow line-width and excellent wavelength stability over temperature, Spectra-Physics’ new wavelength locked diode lasers are an excellent choice for industrial, aerospace and defense, and life and health science customers that demand high power and high brightness in their applications.

“Our new diode lasers are an ideal solution for many of our fiber laser and pumping customers because they offer superior performance in both ideal and harsh operating environments, they maintain wavelength stability, and they maximize dollar per watt performance by delivering better overall system efficiency,” said Rajiv Pandey, Product Manager for Semiconductor Diode Lasers at Spectra-Physics. “For example, the combination of narrow line-width with wavelength stability enables more efficient pumping of solid-state lasers – an increase of up to 5% in many cases.”

The new wavelength locked fiber coupled diode lasers deliver up to 30W output from a 400mm core fiber (0.22NA), with narrow line width of <0.5nm at full width half maximum. In addition, they deliver superior wavelength stability with respect to temperature, current and operating hours. The typical wavelength-temperature drift is 0.01nm per °C. The typical wavelength-current drift is 0.01nm per Amp and typical wavelength-operating hours drift is 0.1nm per 3000 hours of operation. Spectra-Physics will offer wavelength locking technology in fiber coupled diode lasers at 808nm, 940nm, 976nm or 980nm.

Pandey added, “Typically, diode lasers shift 0.2nm per °C, so the laser system’s cooling capability has to be very sensitive. Because our wavelength locking technology ensures the best possible performance in even harsh operating environments, our customers can reduce the cost of their systems by eliminating the need for expensive chillers, power supplies, etc.”
