Newport’s Next Generation NewStep™ Controller and Switchbox Enables Control of Up to Eight Positioners Using a Single Controller

Irvine, California – June. 2005 – Newport Corporation, a worldwide leader in motion control solutions, today introduced the next generation NewStep™ NSC200 motion controller, an integrated, hand-held stepper motor controller-driver that provides affordable, single-axis control of NSA12 motorized actuators and MFA-PP linear stages. The new NSC200 controller-driver provides users with both ergonomic manual control and computer control and features a 64x microstepping ratio for ultrasmooth, high-sensitivity positioning. When used with the new NSC-SB switchbox the NSC200 can position up to eight NewStep devices providing users with the lowest cost eight axis solution available.

The NSC200 motion controller also features a new DSP that enables firmware expansion and supports all the functionality required by the switchbox and future NewStep positioners. Communications in the remote mode is provided by an RS-485 communications link that allows computer control of up 256 units in parallel. When switched to local mode using the control knob users can command manual adjustment of positioners through the rotary knob. In this mode it is also possible to select between the current positioner under control. The NSC-SB features a series of LED’s that provide status of connected positioners. The controller also features an auto-scan feature to detect connected devices and auto-configuration for NewStep
actuators. In addition to switchbox compatibility, the NSC200 also provides additional functionality to allow users to select between two trajectory modes - velocity and position, modify the manual knob speed settings.
