The NOMAD is an inexpensive, minimalist SPM instrument. The standard Q-Scope scan head is placed in a simple tripod holder, with two manually adjustable feet to bring the probe near the sample surface and one motorized foot to perform the automatic engaging and disengaging of the probe with the surface. The Nomad microscope supports the same range of scan heads, and uses the same electronics, video microscope, and software as the more expensive Quesant microscopes. A common biological application for the NOMAD is to mount it on top of an inverted optical microscope to allow access to both forms of microscopy at the same time. Another common application is to view samples which are very large and cannot be moved or broken into smaller samples, i.e., where the microscope must go to the sample instead of the other way around.
