Organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) have recently become one of the most potential techniques for future display applications. In this very promising field the IPMS demonstrates system competence in the field of the so called “second generation” OLED technology. The “second generation” OLED technology combines highly efficient OLED stack systems (in cooperation with the Spin-Off Novaled GmbH) combined with most modern fabrication technology and new novel driving controllers.
At the SID 2004 in Seattle (booth 1633) the Fraunhofer IPMS presents first customized “second generation“ OLED modules and symbols combined with new driving electronics and fabricated based on the worldwide first vertical In-Line fabrication system.
OLED industrial inexpensive fabrication technology is still an open issue. The conventional cluster organic deposition systems are not easily scalable to meet production requirements and costs. Especially by the use of large substrates the throughput and handling in such machines is limited. Based on these facts, at the IPMS a different concept for the deposition is used. Together with the Applied Films Corporation, the first vertical In-Line production system for OLED's on 300x400mm substrates has been established. This tool firstly demonstrates a production principle, which could be used in high volume mass production on larger substrates. OLED modules based on this fabrication principles will be presented on the fair.
