The advances in solid state sensor technology pioneered by SensL enables the possibility of photon counting arrays with individually addressable detectors(pixels). Using its experience in photon counting SensL has generated intellectual property critical to the implementation of such arrays. This technology will lead to a new generation of photon counting arrays and imagers for biomedical, laser ranging and night imaging applications.
Using a novel readout architecture and device design which we call a DigitalAPD (patent pending) we have the capability of making imager arrays that behave like CCD/CMOS imagers but with the ability to detect single photons. This architecture eliminates the requirement for an external quench circuit for each pixel, which is a key enabler for arrays and miniaturization.
At the photodiode level it is important to note that the significant difference between this architecture and the more traditional CMOS and CCD imaging sensors is that SensL operates the diode in Geiger mode (above the breakdown voltage). This allows the device to be extremely sensitive to individual photons of light.
The product will be available in module format with all the appropriate interface architecture and with a PCI interface. A software interface will enable the extraction of the imaging information to a PC. The sensor will be available in a range for sizes from 2 x 2 up to 100 x 100 pixels of various pixel sizes.
