Believed to be the smallest of its kind available, the new Vari-Tork Miniature In-Line Slip Clutch from HUCO is just 16mm in diameter and 26mm in length. Its torque range is 0.1 to 0.5 Ncm, with zero backlash.
The construction of the Vari-Tork is simple, robust and comprises a series of steel clutch plates engaging a hub and series of friction rings engaging a housing. Pressure is brought to bear on plates and rings by an adjuster acting through a spring and pressure plate.
Drag or slip torque is adjusted by means of a single screw accessible through the Vari-Tork’s nylon housing. This rotary friction device is supplied with 4mm bores as standard.
In common with other models in the Vari-Tork range, this miniature version can be used as a torque limiter whereby it interrupts continuity between power source and load or as a tensioning device, typically maintaining the tension in a filament or tape winding operation by exerting drag on the feed spool. As an over-run device, it absorbs residual inertia of a motor when the load is braked or reaches a terminal stop.
