Lumics has developed the LU0975M017, a laser module offering up to 1.7 W output power through a multi mode fibre with 100 micron core diameter and numerical aperture of 0.22. The hermetically sealed device comes with an internal thermo-electric cooler leading to a typical power consumption of about 6 Watts.
Due to the wavelength an obvious target application is highly efficient pumping of Erbium or Ytterbium solid state lasers, fibre lasers, and high power fibre amplifiers, including double clad Erbium Doped Fibre Amplifiers. However, also materials processing with microscopic resolution as well as many analytical, medical and sensing applications are expected to benefit from the available power densities.
The fact that the high power laser module comes in a cooled, low profile 14-pin butterfly package allows a highly integrated system design. The maximum operating current is specified as 3.3 Amps, the forward voltage does not exceed 2.2 Volts, and the typical threshold current is around 245mA. The laser can be externally modulated with modulation frequencies up to 500 kHz. The company says that such performance is a result of their propriety chip technology which ensures very high reliability due to a special laser facet passivation.
