SPMMini Silicon PhotoMultiplier

The First Solid State Alternative to the Linear PMT
SensL's Silicon PhotoMultiplier (SPMMini) is a large area, high gain (106) APD which shows behaviour similar to that of a traditional PMT in addition to having photon counting ability, see Table. By making micro-arrays of SensL's photon counting pixels, and by connecting the outputs in parallel, proportional information, where the output current is proportional to the detected light intensity, is obtained (for Nphotons < Npixels).

This novel approach overcomes many of the shortcomings of 'normal' APDs such as low gain, noise, voltage stability and difficulties in making large devices. In fact, the performance of the SensL SPMMini is comparable in many ways to that of a standard PMT: High gain and low noise, fast pulse response and good quantum efficiency. However, the SPMMini has many additional benefits, such low voltage bias, compact and rugged and unaffected by magnetic fields.

Features

high gain (~106)
size - up to 4mm x 4mm
low voltage operation ~ 40V
single photon sensitivity
sensitivity: 400nm to 950nm
robust & not damaged by excess ambient light
fast rise time (<1 ns) and recovery time (< 10ns)
low dark current
insensitive to magnetic field
