SURCAT - Contact wire thickness measurement - Cybernetix
SURCAT system is designed to provide high accuracy measurement of contact wire thickness.
The contact wires transfer the pulling electric current through the pantograph to the engine truck. Depending on the power requirement the overhead line is composed of one or two contact wires. These wires are wearied by the carbon contact strip of the pantograph, while rubbing against them. The wearing conditions of the contact wires is a key issue of the maintenance. It is necessary to follow up its thickness evolution in time, in order to ensure preventive maintenance and avoid its breaking which would bring exploitation loss and user dissatisfaction. SURCAT development has been carried out in partnership with the French Railways, SNCF, in order to replace the manual checking of the lines which is difficult and expensive.
Today, measurements and controls are difficult and expensive tasks. This is why Cybernétix, in collaboration with COGIFER, developed the SURCAT system.
The measuring bow is easily mounted on any measuring pantograph, that might be issued either by the client or by Cybernétix. The measuring bow can be operated at high voltage, making it possible to run the measuring car without cutting the power supply of the overhead line. An electronic unit, including drivers and acquisition boards, is mounted on the pantograph frame. This electronic unit is working at high voltage as well, and is powered by a 12 V DC battery. Data stream is downloaded through a fibre optic to the computer that is installed in the car at the electrical ground level. The computer may be connected to any location system, for track chainage purpose.
System control unit
The system, which records all data on hard disk, gives the opportunity to carry out later and precise research on specific points by forward or backward move and at fast or slow speed.
Specific post-processing
In post-processing, the software analyses data acquired during the measurement run :
- List of defaults, which correspond to points under a parametrable threshold, is created automatically.
- Average thickness, section of the wire, predictive date for replacement of the wire, can be calculated.
The system principle is based on a laser sheet produced by an emitter and a receiver mounted on a pantograph which bow horns are modified to protect measurement devices. This arrangement provides accurate and direct measurement of the contact wire thickness.
