In a crash case, aluminium has an excellent energy absorption capability. The specific design of the bumper (cross member) profile cross-section with additional crash elements, can transform kinetic energy into deformation energy in case of a crash. In the case of a head-on collision under 15 km/h the chassis structure remains intact, causing minor repair costs which will result in lower insurance rates in some countries. These beneficial properties of aluminium are also useful for side impact beams in automobile doors.
