Besides decoration products, advertising presents and souvenirs which are sweetening our life, permanent marking has become badly needed as product piracy came along with today’s open border markets. A focused laser beam produces subsurface marking with small dotted micro laceration in laser transparent glass or crystal.

The focusing optics has to meet highest demands as the laser have diffraction limited beam qualities. Furthermore, the marking area has to be flat as the marking is done layer by layer.

F-Theta objectives usually used in these applications, have a focal length of 100 mm and reach marking areas of maximum 60 mm side length. Larger markings are reached by combining several marking volumes, with observable joints.

The telecentric f-theta objective S4LFT0210/121 of Sill Optics offers for subsurface marking applications tremendous benefits. With a focal length of 200 mm scan areas of 140 mm side length are achievable. Spot sizes well below those that can be reached with systems for 1.064 nm can be realized as the f-theta objective has a large aperture of 25 mm and has been designed for 532 nm.

Due to the telecentric nature of the f-theta objective a very homogenous marking result is achieved as the laser spot remains constant in the entire image field and does not become elliptically in the image corners. Furthermore, the resolution in and perpendicular to the image plane is obviously improved as spot size as well as depth of focus are getting smaller with increasing aperture and decreasing wavelength.

Image field distortions as can be seen with non telecentric f-theta objectives can be minimized or even totally avoided.
