The range of materials include Thallium activated Sodium Iodide (NaI(Tl)) , Thallium activated Caesium Iodide (CsI(Tl)), Zinc Tungstate (ZnWO4) , Bismuth Germanate (Bi4Ge3O12), Europium activated Calcium Fluoride (CaF2(Eu))
They employ scintillation crystals which convert X or Gamma Rays into light pulses which are subsequently detected by either a photomultiplier tube or photodiode.
Applications range from thickness gauging in the steel industry to detecting rare radioactive decay events measured in underground caverns
