Temperature issues from heat and IR radiation are solved by sensor packaging. Housings with specific optical filters and secondary exchangeable glasses are built into the sensor enclosure, with water and/or air-cooling of the sensor head.
The sensor is designed to employ specifically written image processing algorithms to obtain a clear image of the laser spot on the hot metal surface. Standoff of laser sensors solves part of the environmental issue; namely, by locating the sensor remote from the hot or molten metal surface. To obtain clean data without “seeing” the energy emitted by the surface, however, this task requires some very complex engineering.
Challenging the integrity of sensor vision data even further, the shiny surface of liquid metal causes multiple reflections of both strong ambient and laser light. The inclusion of our closed loop laser/LED intensity and camera exposure controls effectively increases responsiveness and resolution when measuring through smoke, steam or any other problematic environment, while advanced image processing also eliminates the inaccuracies caused by secondary reflections in shiny metals or alloys.
Our Metal applications division works closely with System Integrators & Original Equipment Machine Suppliers to deliver the most effective solutions for their particular sensor vision needs.
