Mountain View, CA – May 23, 2006 – Spectra-Physics, a Division of Newport and a worldwide leader in laser and photonic solutions to make, manage, and measure light, today introduced the Spitfire® Pro XP and the Spitfire® Pro 5W ultrafast amplifiers. Both versions utilize a revolutionary, patented one-Pockels cell regenerative cavity design that ensures cutting edge performance as well as unmatched stability and beam quality. These new amplifiers are ideal solutions to amplify femtosecond (fs) oscillators such as the industry-leading Tsunami® and Mai Tai®.

“For the last 10 years, the Spitfire ultrafast amplifier family has set the industry standards for beam quality, energy stability and reliability. Today our new amplifiers combine this proven performance with our new, state-of-the-art one-Pockels cell regenerative cavity design to deliver significant performance breakthroughs,” said Julien Klein, Product Manager for Spectra-Physics. “The new cavity design of the Spitfire Pro XP and Spitfire Pro 5W dramatically reduces intra-cavity dispersion and losses to deliver unprecedented specifications for regenerative amplification. They are an ideal solution for ultrafast applications such as multicolor pump-probe studies, nonlinear optics, pumping of optical parametric amplifiers (OPAs), and precision material processing.”

Spectra-Physics’ Spitfire Pro XP uses chirped-pulse and regenerative amplification to deliver industry-leading performance in terms of power, pulse width, stability and mode quality. It generates sub-35 fs pulses in a near TEM00, near transform limited output beam with more than 3 mJ at 1 kHz.

The Spitfire Pro 5W expands Spectra-Physics’ ultrafast regenerative amplifier product family to higher pulse energy levels. It features a hybrid architecture that combines the benefits of a regenerative cavity and of a multipass amplification stage for higher energy with maximum beam quality. The result is a near TEM00, near transform limited output beam of sub-40 fs, sub-120 fs, or picosecond pulses with more than 5 mJ at 1 kHz.

Klein continued, “The Spitfire Pro 5W’s enhanced design is so efficient that it eliminates the need for expensive cryogenic cooling systems common in other high power amplification systems. This is a key advantage for our customers because the simple, robust design means higher reliability and translates immediately into improved daily productivity.”

“These two new Spitfire Pro amplifiers are excellent examples of our commitment to be the premier global resource for complete ultrafast solutions. From the powerful combination of our Tsunami or Mai Tai oscillators and new amplifiers, to our ultrafast optics, motion systems, and vibration isolation equipment, and our Helios transient absorption spectrometer, we are the only company that can provide researchers with complete solutions that reduce set-up time and ensure the highest levels of performance,” concluded Klein.
