Spectra-Physics Unveils Its New Matisse™ CW Ring Laser for the Single-Frequency Laser Marketplace

Mountain View – June 13 – Spectra-Physics, a Division of Newport and a worldwide leader in laser technology, today announced the Matisse™ series of continuous wave (CW) tunable single-frequency lasers. Designed for use in scientific research, the Matisse is an ideal solution for applications such as high resolution spectroscopy, laser cooling and trapping, and the study of Bose-Einstein condensates.

“The state-of-the-art ring Matisse ring laser has an innovative electronic and mechanical design based on the most advanced electro-optical developments made over the past few years,” said Lee McCrumb, product manager for Spectra-Physics. “With an open ring design that ensures ease of use, the Matisse laser provides numerous benefits including ultra-narrow spectral bandwidth in the 10’s of KHz, low noise CW power output, low sensitivity to microphonics, and highly accurate wavelength scanning,.”

Available in both Ti:Sapphire crystal and dye laser configurations, the Matisse CW ring laser is a unique source of broadly tunable, very narrow bandwidth radiation. The overall tuning range extends from 550 to 1000 nm. The laser resonator cavity is designed as a ring structure with various line-narrowing elements and runs “single frequency”. This means that it is operating on a single longitudinal mode (SLM) with a very narrow spectral bandwidth.

Spectra-Physics’ Matisse laser uses composite materials to dampen the effects of performance-reducing vibrations. In addition, it features a fast Electro-Optic Modulator to stabilize the cavity length, a very stable wavelength reference cavity, mechanical three-point registry optical mounting and an accessible, modular design concept.

For optimal performance, each Matisse laser is powered by a highly reliable Millennia Pro diode pumped solid state laser. In addition, Spectra-Physics also offers WaveTrain™ CW frequency doublers that extend the tuning range into the ultraviolet wavelength region” added McCrumb.
