Structural chemical analyzer with scanning electron microscopy technology
In Situ Raman Spectroscopy for the SEM Renishaw’s SCA (structural chemical analyzer) unites two well established technologies--scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy--resulting in a powerful technique for studying the chemical and structural composition of materials without the need to move the sample between instruments.
Most SEMs include an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), which is a powerful technique, but yields only elemental information about a sample. Raman spectroscopy is a light scattering technique used to study molecular vibrations in a sample. The information is analogous to that found in infrared spectroscopy but with better spatial resolution (~1 µm), and is a technique especially suited for organic materials. Renishaw’s SCA is fitted to JEOL’s SEM column and provides the interface between the SEM and the Raman spectrometer. In addition to the SEM image, having the SCA allows for the collection of a Raman spectrum, as well as the capability to collect photoluminescence (PL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectra. Coupling these techniques will provide morphological, chemical, electronic and structural information at the micrometer scale.
Applications for SEM-Raman analysis include:
Polymer and materials science Geology Semiconductor applications Forensic science Pharmaceuticals
