Vitreous (Glassy) Carbon an Economical Alternative

BUYER'S GUIDE

Vitreous or glassy carbon from Goodfellow is a form of pure carbon with properties that often make it an economical alternative to more expensive materials. For example, vitreous carbon has excellent resistance to a wide range of aggressive chemical environments and can, therefore, be used as an alternative material to precious metals for laboratory equipment and for electrodes in polarography.

In foam form, vitreous carbon has an open pore structure and extremely high porosity, providing a high surface area and low resistance to fluid flow. It is chemically inert in non-oxidizing environments over a wide temperature range, maintains strength at high temperatures, and is thermally insulating yet electrically conducting. Applications of vitreous carbon foam include use as porous electrodes, thermal insulation, filtration, substrate support and acoustic control.

For 35 years, Goodfellow has been a supplier of metals, polymers, ceramics and other materials to meet the research, development, and specialized production requirements of science and industry worldwide. Goodfellow specializes in supplying small quantities (a few grams to a few kilos) of metals and materials for research or prototype development. The company also offers custom fabrication and finishing services.
